Although you'll still be able to use Office for Mac 2011, you might want to upgrade to a newer version of Office so you can stay up to date with all the latest features, patches, and security updates.
Updates For Microsoft Office 2011 Mac
Microsoft has released security bulletins MS11-021 and MS11-022. These security bulletins contain all the relevant information about the security updates for Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 for Mac. To view the complete security bulletins, visit the following Microsoft websites:
If you have an Office 365 subscription but your computer can't run Office 2016 (if it's too old), you can use Office in the Cloud. Microsoft says you can go to "portal.office.com. This includes Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, along with Skype and OneDrive for Business.... Otherwise, you will have to either purchase a new device or continue using the now unsupported Office 2011 for Mac."
2011 versions of Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint will no longer receive feature or security updates as of October 10, 2017. Any form of paid or free technical support from Microsoft has also ended indefinitely.
Microsoft notes in the same memorandum that Office for Mac 2011 "have not been tested" and "no formal support for this configuration will be provided." Office for Mac 2011 will also cease all support from Microsoft on October 10, 2017 and no further updates in any form will be provided after that date.
I've been doing some testing with this when both 2016 and 2011 are installed. If I comment out the MAU deletion line, MAU is still there, but office 2016 apps no longer have the "Check for Updates" option in the Help menu. What controls that?? I assume whatever it is is also get getting deleted....
In this case, my script is removing the licensing plist '/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.office.licensing.plist' - not the system level /Library/Preferences/com.microsoft I'm not deleting in that path.
Microsoft Office stopped supporting Office for Mac 2011 on October 10, 2017. Although you can continue to use its functions, you cannot keep up to date with all the latest features, patches, and security updates. To uninstall it, follow the following steps:

The last major release of Microsoft Office for Mac was the 2011 edition. Due to Microsoft's naming and release timing, the release of Office 2011 actually took place in late 2010. While Microsoft has made updates to Office 2011 over the years, such as the addition of Retina display support in 2012, the applications in the software suite still look quite dated due to their use of pre-Yosemite OS X interface elements. Today, Microsoft is bringing Office for Mac visually and functionally up to par with the versions on other platforms with the release of Office 2016 for Mac.
To remove Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 you need to move all Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 folders and files to Trash. The list of files and folders that need to be removed is described at the following URL: -US/library/jj984171(v=office.14).aspx.
if [[ $ver1 -eq 10 ]]; then ver2=$(echo $ver1end cut -d "." -f -1) if [[ $ver2 -ge 6 ]]; then for rcpts in $(ls "/var/db/receipts/" grep com.microsoft.office tr "\n" ":" ); do rm -r "/var/db/receipts/$rcpts" done else for rpcts in $(ls "/Library/Receipts/" grep Office tr "\n" ":" ); do rm -r "/Library/Receipts/$rcpts" done fi fi
