The Elevation Discovery and Download Application permits search, discovery, and download of Geolibrary elevation data holdings. Users may search for elevation data via several search methods, and download data to their computers.
Elevation download
Notice-June 5, 2020: The Elevation Discovery and Download Application ( ) issue has been identified and the Maine Office of GIS is pursuing options to improve the function of the application. At this time, users are able to download data with the application. The Maine Office of GIS has found that data downloads in the Elevation application will not always work if the selected tiles involve overlapping data, and occasionally will fail in instances where the original source data is in Esri Grid format. If a user query result returns null data or a limited subset of data in .zip file format, the user should individually download the tiles required.
The WV Elevation and LIDAR Data Download Tool (www.mapwv.gov/elevation or www.mapwv.gov/lidar) allows users to identify areas of interest and download LiDAR point cloud files and derived elevation products (DEM, hillshade, contours). DEM Mosaics and County Bundles of elevation data are also available as value-added products.
The Elevation Download Tool allows users to access the original elevation data and metadata at the project level at which the source data was delivered. The project level elevation data sets are organized into the following directories:LiDAR QL2 Project: Classified LiDAR point data collected at Quality Level 2 (QL2) specifications (supports1-foot contours and is typically more current) and LiDAR-derived products (DEMs, Contours, Intensity Images). Please note that the data provided are in a compressed format(.zlas). Please refer to this document for decompressing.
County Bundles: The best available elevation data (DEMs, hillshade, contours, LiDAR point files) organized by county for user convenience.
DEM Mosaics: LiDAR-derived DEM and Hillshade mosaic products generated at the project and state levels.
Contours - High Resolution: Contour lines derived from LiDAR and photogrammetry ranging from 10-foot to 1-foot intervals.
Legacy LiDAR Project: Older, lower quality elevation data sets (QL3, QL4).
WV State Elevation Catalog Metadata: A statewide compilation of all elevation metadata (catalog, graphic, GIS files of tiles and footprints, etc.).
The web application includes access to more than 10 different LiDAR project acquisitions. New elevation data will be added to the site as it becomes available. An interactive map allows users to identify areas of interest and then bulk download LiDAR or DEM tiles. Viewers may also choose to download publicly-available LiDAR, DEMs, and metadata from USGS's The National Map Download Tool.
Data providers of the WV elevation and LIDAR data include FEMA, USGS, USACE, WV Department of Environment Protection, WV View, WV GIS Technical Center, and select counties. FEMA has purchased QL2 LiDAR and derived elevation products for the entire State with the goal in three years to have a statewide 1-meter resolution DEM that supports 2- or 1-foot contours.
The Data Access Viewer (DAV) allows a user to search for and download elevation (lidar), imagery, and land cover data for the coastal U.S. and its territories. The data, hosted by the NOAA Office for Coastal Management, can be customized and requested for free download through a checkout interface. An email provides a link to the customized data, while the original data set is available through a link within the viewer.
MassGIS has created a single geodatabase that contains all of the data listed below. Because it cannot be added to the geodatabase, in the same download zip file are the Digital Terrain Model (DTM) Files.
Using two radar antennas and a single pass, it collected sufficient data to generate a digital elevation model using a technique known as interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR). C-Band penetrated canopy cover to the ground better but SRTM still struggled in sloping regions with foreshortening, layover and shadow.
In late 2014, the United States government released the highest resolution SRTM DEM to the public. This 1-arc second global digital elevation model has a spatial resolution of about 30 meters. Also, it covers most of the world with an absolute vertical height accuracy of less than 16m.
The USGS Astrogeology Science Center is the DEM data hub for Mars. USGS found elevations above the areoid from a Martian gravity field solution GMM-2B with a total elevation uncertainty of at least 3m.
An additional global product is now available: the ASTER Water Body Dataset (ASTWBD). This raster product identifies all water bodies as either ocean, river, or lake. Each GDEM tile has a corresponding Water Body tile. The GDEM and ASTWBD are available for download from NASA Earthdata and Japan Space Systems. This ASTER product is available at no charge for any user pursuant to an agreement between METI and NASA. For more information about the GDEM, see the Validation Report: ASTER GDEM V2 Validation Summary Report.
Lidar ("Light detection and ranging") is an active remote sensing technology that uses laser light to detect and measure surface features on the earth. Lidar-derived high-resolution elevation data products are available for all of Minnesota.
ArcGIS 10.1 Toolbox (MnDNR)Streamlines downloading and merging lidar data associated with a polygon of interest from within ArcGIS softwareRequires ArcGIS 10.1 Service Pack 1 or above.
As part of New Jersey's statewide GIS coordination program, LiDAR data collections and derived elevation products are available for download. These data are stored in Amazon Web Services (AWS) Simple Storage Service through the AWS Open Data program and are available for download using the AWS Command Line Interface.
To see the spatial coverage of all elevation projects, use the now deprecated LiDAR and DEM Datasets for NJ index layer (previously used for the NJ Elevation Product Finder and Product Extent web applications).
To download the files, use the AWS Command Line Interface. After installing the CLI, issue commands from your computer's command prompt. In Windows 10, that is found under "Windows System" or by right-clicking the Windows Start button, then click Run, then type cmd into the command line, then click OK. Instructions for download options are provided below:
Perform a dry run without downloading any files to confirm the CLI is working and the command parameters are correct. Change the c:\DEM\ to the local directory into which the files will be copied. To execute a dry run, use the following command:
